Following the launch of the International Thousand Human Genome Project, BGI in collaboration with the top research institutes, universities and enterprises in China jointly launched the “Million Microbial Genomes Project”, which will focus on the systematic research of high-variation microbial resources in China at the genomic level. The goal of the project is to further understand the microbial metabolic mechanisms and to lay the foundation for exploring the regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and signaling at an overall level, and more importantly, to study the impact of microbes on the environment and humans. The deciphering of the microbial genomes will promote basic scientific research and greatly promote the industrial applications of microorganisms.
The microbes studied in the project will include archaea, bacteria, fungi, algae, viruses in common environments and extreme environments, covering industrial, agricultural, and medical microbiology. The ultimate goal of the project is to establish a genome encyclopedia of Chinese microbial resources.
