Bridging Genomics and Talent between BGI Group and Chulalongkorn University: The Vision of Professor Nattiya Hirankarn

May 02, 2024 Views:

In the realm of science and technology, with an ever-expanding frontier of knowledge, the cultivation of future scientists stands as a pillar of progress. At the forefront of this mission is Professor Nattiya Hirankarn, Associate Dean of Graduate Affairs at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and the visionary Director of the "BGI x Chula Talent Training Programs." Her esteemed career, rooted in immunology and genetics, has positioned her as a distinguished figure within the university in Thailand, and the broader academic landscape.

In early 2023, a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding was signed between BGI Group and the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University. This collaboration symbolizes a commitment to propel genomics research and talent development in Thailand, advancing scientific research and nurturing the next generation of scientists.

"I heard about BGI more than 20 years ago," Professor Hirankarn recalls. As a Ph.D. graduate, her work on genetics led to a connection with BGI Group, a name synonymous with pioneering research services in genomics. "When we heard that BGI has programs that collaborate with academic institutes in Thailand, we were very happy to be a part of them," she explains.

This partnership is not merely about academic exchange; it’s a comprehensive program designed to provide students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge technology. Professor Hirankarn emphasizes the importance of practical learning. The students crave real-world experience and are eager to understand the vast career opportunities that await them, not just in Thailand but globally.

What sets the “BGI x Chula Talent Training Programs” apart is an inclusive approach, extending beyond the Faculty of Medicine to encompass various disciplines within the university. It's a collaborative effort involving the Faculty of Science, Allied Health Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Veterinary Science. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that students from different fields gain exposure to genomics, opening up a myriad of career paths.

The collaboration has already seen tangible outcomes, with two BGI scientists appointed as adjunct professors at Chulalongkorn University, offering expertise in stem cell research, regenerative medicine, and bioinformatics. This academic partnership is further enhanced by opportunities for students to visit BGI's facilities in China, supported by the company. "This is part of the new way of teaching that we call experiential learning," says Professor Hirankarn. Students gain invaluable experience by being immersed in a real-world genomic center, beyond the confines of a classroom.

“We are not just going to send students to work on projects under a professor at BGI. We are going to end up being a real partner in doing research projects together," said Professor Hirankarn in describing her plan for the partnership that transcends traditional academic boundaries. This plan is making headway, moving from paper to reality. A significant agreement has been struck between BGI Group and the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University to embark on projects in spatiotemporal omics research and the development of skilled professionals. Another cooperative effort on colon cancer research is also being carried out.

The “BGI x Chula Talent Training Programs” stand as a testament to the power of collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and cultivating talent, promising a future where technological advancements and human potential go hand-in-hand. Through her leadership and collaboration with BGI Group, Professor Hirankarn is not only shaping the future of genomics research in Thailand but is also forging a path for the next generation of scientists.
