BGI plans to complete the whole genome sequencing of 101 vertebrate animals and analyze their genetic code. The goal is to build high-quality genomic maps, data information platforms and to promote research on various species related to genomics.

In November 2010, BGI and the Alliance for Vertebrate Genome Projects (G10K) jointly announced the launch of the first phase of the Vertebrate Genome Project. The program relies on BGI’s high-throughput next-generation sequencing technology, powerful bioinformatics analysis and data processing capabilities, and plans to complete the genome-wide sequencing of 101 species of vertebrates and analyze their genetic code.

BGI uses a new generation of high-throughput sequencing technology to sequence the 101 vertebrate animals, assemble annotations of whole genome sequences, and construct phylogenetic trees between different species.

“ The G10K project plans to map the genus of vertebrate genomes and establish a genetic information database of 10,000 species of vertebrate including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish to study biodiversity and the mechanism of animal evolution provides an unprecedented source of resources for life science and global animal protection. The program currently consists 43 research institutions and 68 scientists from around the world.
